and “hot spots” in the area so that, with or without a guide, you
have a once-in-a-lifetime fly fishing experience. Our Fly Fishing
Cabin Rentals NC put you right in the midst of the High Country’s
most alluring rivers and magnificent beauty.
Watauga
and South Holston
The Watauga River and South Holston River have some of the most
productive tailwaters in the country. ‘Tailwater’ is a term that
excellent waters for fishing due to its location downstream from a
dam, culvert or bridge. If you are looking for great tailwater or
small stream fly fishing, the Watauga and South Holston Rivers offer
the perfect NC Fly Fishing environment. The Watauga River originates
off the slopes of Grandfather Mountain in Linville NC, flowing along
HWY 105 out of North Carolina into Tennessee. Along Highway 105 in
Boone and Foscoe there are many wading opportunities to fish for
Brook, Brown and Rainbow Trout. The Watauga River’s tailwaters start
in Elizabethton TN and offer 16 miles of pristine waters to fish for
trophy rainbow and brown trout. The upper section of the river has
multiple areas for wading, but the trophy sections of the river are
only accessible by boat. The waters downstream from the Wilber Dam
are also popular rafting areas so fly fishers on the Watauga River
are advised to look out for tubers, rafters and swimmers during the
warmer months.
New River
The New River in North Carolina is not only one of the oldest rivers
in the world, it’s an excellent river for NC Fly Fishing. The New
River is one of the best rivers in the country to fish for
smallmouth bass and Muskie. Fly fishing guide outfitters offer
trophy smallmouth bass trips in North Carolina and Virginia. Guided
float trips on the New River are recommended as smallmouth bass tend
to be unpredictable fish. The Middle Fork of the New River begins at
the Chetola Dam in Blowing Rock NC and is a medium-sized stream with
Brook Trout, Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. There are many easy New
River access points along the Blue Ridge Parkway and Highway 321from
Aho Road south to Roaring River Road.
Boone’s
Fork Creek
Boone’s Fork Creek begins at
Price Lake in Blowing Rock just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. The
creek offers catch and release trout fishing and flows south all the
way to Foscoe NC which is very convenient to our Fly Fishing Cabin
Rentals NC. Dutch Creek is similar to Boone’s Fork Creek and is
located in Valle Crucis. Dutch Creek is well stocked with wild and
hatchery bred fish. These creeks are perfect for easy and convenient
High Country Fishing. For bigger fish and a more challenging
experience, check out the Watauga and South Holtson Rivers.
Grassy Creek
Grassy Creek offers fantastic waters for trout and fly fishing.
Located in Spruce Pine NC, just down the street from our Fly Fishing
Cabin Rentals NC, Grassy Creek is within a “Mountain Heritage Trout
City.” Fly Fishers will find all three species of North Carolina
trout in these waters, but strict regulations for NC Fly Fishing
within the Mountain Heritage Trout Waters require a fishing permit.
Be sure to consult blue and yellow diamond-shaped signs posted
throughout the High Country for designated fishing regulations on
the many NC Fly Fishing rivers.
North Toe River
The North Toe River meanders through North Carolina and terminates
just south of Linville NC. Along with the Linville River, the North
Toe River is a hatchery supported fishing river. The North Toe River
has a 2.3 mile Mountain Heritage Trout water section that flows
through Spruce Pine NC from the Highway 226 to the US 19E Bridge.
Wilson Creek, Lost Cove Creek and Harpers Creek
Lost Cove Creek is a great Linville NC angler destination.
Maintained by NCWRC’s Catch and Release, Fly-Fishing Only
regulations, Lost Cove Creek flows through the Lost Cove Wilderness
Study Area. For a rugged and secluded NC Fly Fishing experience,
Lost Cove Creek has abundant trout in deep pools and falls along the
creek.
The Upper Wilson Creek Area and Harpers Creek Wilderness Study Area
are adjacent to the Lost Cove Creek Area and offer primitive,
natural trout waters in Avery and Caldwell Counties. Wilson Creek is
a "National Wild and Scenic River" along its upper portions and is
open year-round. All three wilderness areas are within the Pisgah
National Forest and have spectacular Trout Fishing Pisgah
opportunities.
Grandfather Trout Farm
For a child friendly fishing experience, head over to the
Grandfather Mountain Trout Farm in Banner Elk. Only a short drive
away from our Fly Fishing Cabin Rentals NC, Grandfather Trout Farm
is located at the entrance to Seven Devils and offers many trout
stocked ponds.
